Kimmer hosted a baby shower for daughter, Sari, this weekend. Sari lives over two hours away and only gets to come into town to visit with all her friends and family once every month or so. While she is here, she likes to visit with as many of her friends as she can, but since she is 8 months pregnant, going out to meet them at bars or events is a bit uncomfortable, so we try to bring people to her at the house.

The baby shower was really just an excuse to throw a party and bring all her friends over for a nice long visit. Hence the fact that we did not have the typical tea and crumpets kind of baby shower, nooooo…. we threw a keg and pizza party baby shower. I know, kind of crass? A bit too NASCAR racing fan-ish? Total heathen, pagan, sin according to the Southern rules of etiquette, no doubt.

Our party was for both women and men. Sari decided that the women would start off the event with the ritualistic party games and present opening on the main level while the men gathered in the basement. Their requirement was to bring diapers in exchange for free beer on tap. Hubby and Boy decided to include the additional element of poker night. The boys took a break from cards to join the girls for pizza and the ice cream bar. While we had their attention captured for a minute, we decided to play some homemade Pictionary. The thought of tipsy men drawing pictures of teddy bears and breast milk, was too much to take! It was an all out laugh fest! However, the boys did win in the end by one point. Good job boys! And kudos to the ringer of the group – a total Grandpa who knew all the nursery rhymes! Good Job Mr. M!

The funniest thing about the evening was that a couple of the boys (boyfriends and/or husbands of the younger set) had never been to a baby shower before. One even said that he was looking forward to the next baby shower his girlfriend was invited to! We nearly busted a gut trying to explain to him that this is NOT the usual event and he should not be offended when he really isn’t on the guest list! Then again, perhaps it would have been funnier to just let him believe all baby showers are like this one and then die laughing when he asks the hostess where the keg is located and how much money should he bring to buy-in to the next hand.

I think everyone had a good time. The party actually lasted longer than I did, but Hubby informed me that all were home safe and sound by 3 a.m. Sari received some terrific gifts and we gratefully thank everyone who participated.
