I am at a loss for words when it comes to understanding what qualifies as humor on the 20-Something’s sit-coms these days. It is quite obvious that my age is a major factor.

I saw a new show last night on TV where a “professional” 20-Something told a little girl (her Goddaughter) that Linus was stupid and had no purpose. Granted, Linus is a cartoon character who annually waits all Halloween Night in the pumpkin patch to no avail; still it’s a classic story of hopes and dreams and childhood innocence. If this sit-com is still on air come the Christmas Holidays is this 20-Something going to tell the little girl that Santa Claus is merely a homeless bum who breaks into people’s houses just to eat cookies and milk for free? This is not funny.

I saw another show where the 20-Something told a woman he had not seen in a long time that she was not as amazing as he imagined her to be and that she kissed like she was giving CPR in reverse. Is this how we talk to one another now?

Finally, I saw a sit-com where two 20-Somethings were carving pumpkins with a little girl at the kitchen table. The little girl pulls a large Ziploc baggie filled with “grass clippings” and asks if it was candy. One of the women explains it’s her private, special candy imported from Afghanistan. Seriously?

All of these shows come on TV between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Primetime for children to be watching!

When my children were small, they used to watch The Simpsons until they began repeating words they learned from the show, such as, “Shut up Mom, you’re stupid.”

And that was the end of that.
