We pour a little out…

Raise your glasses!

November 2nd is known as Dia de los Muertas (The Day of the Dead).  Mexican tradition states that on this day we celebrate the lives of our late friends and family members. The purpose of this National Holiday is to spend the entire day at the cemetery, making a lot of noise; singing and dancing to wake the dead, then, leave them offerings of their favorite foods, candy and tasty drinks (this I can relate to), typically tequila. Mas Tequila Por Favor!

I can appreciate spending a day reflecting on those we have lost. Although, I’m sorry to say, I am NOT Mexican (so no, you can’t deport me) I also cannot spend an entire day hosting a picnic with Dance Dance Revolution on my Mother’s grave (or my sister’s).

Anal retentive white Anglo Saxon me finds it a bit disrespectful to walk on top of the dead and buried.

However, I do visit the cemetery every time I visit the State of Ohio and I do leave gifts and flowers. I actually spend quite a lot of time finding the perfect offering for each fine lady, almost like searching for the perfect Christmas or birthday present. My sister would cringe at any clutter so, for her, if I add anew I must edit accordingly. Mommy always loved Cardinals. She had an entire Family Room constructed with plenty of windows and glass doors overlooking her backyard, just so she could see those bright red birds perched against the fresh white snow every winter. I miss them both so very much.

This year, when I travel to Ohio and I visit the cemetery, I will remember to bring along three shot glasses and fine bottle of tequila, a picnic blanket and an array of hors d’oeuvres and accoutrements. If you hear the faint sound of Elvis Pressley or Cat Stevens wafting along the banks of the Maumee River…you’ll know the three of us have had a few too many toasts.

We raise a glass to our friends and pour a little out for for those we have lost…
