…laughing all the way

Like most of us, as we get older, our weaknesses and vulnerabilities peak through the tough old goat exterior that once scared small neighborhood children with a single sneer. We goats march on a little softer, a little quieter and a little needier.

TODAY marks one year since we said goodbye to my Mother. Dad has been hanging in for a whole year all by himself. With two visits to the hospital himself and a daily visit to the cemetary, he’s trying to be strong. But he is so much softer, quieter and needier. He’s lonely and heartbroken.

He says he has taken up milkshakes as his (doctor recommended) hobby. I don’t think milkshakes qualifies, but at least the bourbon takes a break now and again.

He rants and raves about the Cleveland Clinic and that’s OK, too. I will politely listen and concur. We both disagree with the doctor’s decision to perform such a major operation on an 80 year old woman in the first place. Can’t change it all now, so instead we commiserate over the phone, send flowers to the cemetary and for the first time in my 40(+) years of life, we old goats say I LOVE YOU out loud.

Miss you very much Mommy.
