In honor of this LOVE fest day:
I have a girlfriend whom I have known for more than 30 years. She just made an astonishing 180 degree turn in her life. The fascinating part is the stories she shares with me, the comments she makes, the level of communication…well it’s a reminder to the rest of us not to take so much for granted (at least to me).
My girlfriend was married to a man who wasn’t very kind. At least not the loving, gentle or honoring way. She was unaware of flowers for no reason at all, being helped to put her coat on, Valentine’s Day cards…In the last two months alone, she has received more thoughtful gestures than in an entire marriage.
At first, I thought she was over exaggerating. Her marriage was not that horrible. Then I felt sadness for her not receiving the kindness that I receive every day. Then I felt selfish for not appreciating that kindness enough.
She gushed about her new man opening the car door for her. She was stunned when he gave her some cold hard cash and told her to buy herself a new outfit so he could take her out to dinner. She was giddy over the silly conversation they shared while simply people watching. She cried after reading the card he gave her for Valentine’s Day.
I am sad that she is only just now learning about these things. I am happy that she is finally enjoying these things.
I am definitely telling my husband that I do appreciate him every day. Happy Valentine’s Day!
