I read the following excerpt from the Yahoo front page:

 Sarcasm Seen as Evolutionary Survival Skill

Sarcasm, then, is a verbal hammer that connects people in both a negative and positive way. We know that sense of humor is important to relationships; if someone doesn’t get your jokes, they aren’t likely to be your friend (or at least that’s my bottom line about friendship). Sarcasm is simply humor’s dark side, and it would be just as disconcerting if a friend didn’t get your snide remarks. 

Yep, evolutionary survival skill. Sarcasm ranks right up there with fight or flight. Many times have a quick wit and dry humor saved me from imminent danger. Why once my ex-husband actually asked me to re-marry him, thank god for sarcasm because he may have mistaken my incredibly loud burst of laughter for a positive answer!

Making a “snide remark” can be taken either way, just depends on who hears it and how they perceive it, therefore, sarcasm is not a survival skill any more than sitting on a fence is a decision making tool.
