Everything Old is New Again

November 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

This was the first Halloween, in a long time, without Scooter to use as a decoy/reason for celebrating. Needless to say, I was feeling a bit less than enthusiastic this year, but Boy was throwing his annual bash and he was kind enough to invite his (embarrassing) parents.  So I made the effort and purchased a costume and some candy to hand out to any potential trick or treaters in the new neighborhood.

At 6pm I was sitting outside, in costume, with a big tray of tootsie rolls, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Dots and Baby Ruths. For the entire first hour nary half-dozen children stopped by. The temperature had dropped twenty degrees and I was not enjoying this at all. Just as I was about to give up and go inside, three adults came bounding down the cart path; giggling and skipping like little kids. Two of them were in full costumes, the third explained (in very broken English) that the two were young twenty-somethings, newly married and obviously too old for Halloween, but they are fresh from South Korea and this is their very first time even knowing Halloween existed as a holiday. They saw our house with its decorations and scary music and wanted to “play along”.

Obviously, we think of Halloween as a children’s holiday. It’s for dressing up in super hero costumes and getting lots of candy from the neighbors. But in my opinion, it may be even more of a special holiday for those of us who are not children. A chance for adults to lighten up and let loose. Go ahead, don that super hero costume and eat some calorie-ridden candy!

The young couple asked to take pictures with us in front of the haunted house and then proceeded to hold out their plastic pumpkin and proudly scream, “Trick or Treat!”  Hubby and I posed for pictures then filled their bucket with almost the entire tray of candy.

Thank you to the young couple for reminding me of what joy really is.  (I sure hope they come back for Christmas!)

It really was a Happy Halloween!
