Thursday, April 3, 2008 is Opening Day at Baron’s Baseball. Whoo Hoo! Yes, it is a minor league team which is mostly a farm team for the White Sox. Originally known as the Birmingham Black Barons where Satchel Paige and Willie Mays played during the 40 years of the Negro National League, long before Jackie Robinson crossed the white barrier line. Rickwood Field is where they played, it is the oldest baseball stadium in the world and it still stands in the city today.
So here we are at The Met (renamed Regions Park) in Hoover, Alabama. Might not be as exciting or expensive as the Major Leagues, but we call it home. I have seen Cecil Fielder (my hero) play here and Kirby Puckett (Hubby’s hero), I have seen Jose Lima play here and yes, even Michael Jordan attempted baseball here. From what I have seen, he should stick to basketball.
Opening Day just happens to be Boy’s 22nd birthday and we are celebrating with $1 beers and 25 cent wings, (sponsored by Hooter’s, no less.) It is a sunny spring day in the Ham. Could anyone ask for more? Gee, I remember when Boy was in an adorable little league uniform. Seems like yesterday yelling my head off in the stands as he made the most amazing double play; scoop line drive from short stop, tag forced runner, then behind the back to the second baseman for the second out. It was a play to behold! I also have little league to thank for rekindling a friendship that had waned (V, thinking of you babe). But alas, little league does not last forever.
But here I am at a baseball game with my Boy. Life is good and I am happy. I wish everyone a day like today.
